- here are a couple of references for you to read http://doylesails.com/DoyleSailCare.pdf they recommend hydrofluoric acid and professionally cleaning by a sail loft. http://woodenboat.com./forum/showthread.php?t=8533 they recommend using oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) or using hydrochloric acid (muritic) first followed by oxygen bleach. in the past we have used "sail cleaner" from west marine soaking sails in a bathtub overnight and had fair results. my suggestion is to try the oxygen bleach first (remember to rinse, rinse, rinse with plenty of fresh water. if it doesn't remove the stain then consider using the acid but be aware it is hazardous to humans and you will need to follow all safety requirements. your other option is to have the sail professionally cleaned by a sail loft. hope this helps.
- Lemon juice has worked.
- You didn't state the age of the boat and sails so I recommend that you send the sails to a Sail loft. They will inspect and repair any damage, measure the condition of the Dacron, and clean the sails. The most recommended sail loft among the older boat owners I hang with is below
- Throw it in a chlorinated swimming pool for a day.
- Rust stains will not come out. Mildew stains can be reduced somewhat with 10% bleach solution, but if left on too long may significantly weaken stitching.
